Zimbra Exporter to Exchange - Cases, Stories and Experience

For a system admin, Zimbra Migration to New Server, i.e MS Exchange platform is not easy and of course requires a lot of planning; as it involves the conversion of all user mailboxes from Zimbra to Exchange environment. Despite being risky; the job is quite complicated as well & Zimbra Converter will help you in bridging the gap.

Dubai based National Insurance Firm Employed Zimbra Converter to Perform 1000 User mailboxes Migration from Zimbra to Exchange 2010

After testing the software demo version, one of the system engineer's of company contacted our support team and showed interest in getting assistance for Zimbra mirgate acccounts to new server, Microsoft Exchange Server. Their concern was whether it is possible to migrate around 1550 GB of data from Zimbra Web Client to Exchange Server 2010. They specified some of their requirements as to:

  • Create one PST for each Zimbra user mailbox
  • Maintaining folder structure similar to Zimbra Web Client
  • Each item should migrate i.e. email, contact, calendar etc
  • Migrate PST to Exchange server, into thier respective mailboxes

How Did we Proceed?

Our Zimbra migration expert guided the company's technical team and system admin for planning the entire project.

  • Firstly, they exported and created .tgz file for all the user mailboxes within Zimbra Web Client/Desktop. This took around 1 day from their side as this was easily done via import/export option within Zimbra Desktop or Web Client.

Note: If you are using Zimbra Web Client then you have to login into every user account one by one and import the complete data as .tgz. Direct importing from Zimbra Server does not create .tgz file thus, you won't be able to perform Zimbra to live Exchange export process using Zimbra Desktop Migration Tool.

  • Then, they informed us about the status with remote connection of their machine to take a look on what they have done so far. Our Zimbra expert monitored the exported.tgz files and further instructed them to unzip the .tgz files as such files are Tar G zipped file format, which needs to be extracted first.

Note: You need to manually unzip each .tgz file on the same migration machine.

  • Once they were all set, we then provided them with most recent version of Zimbra Migrator and guided them to use the tool for each .tgz file one at a time.
  • Software helped the client to export each Zimbra mailbox to PST file. In this way they were able to create PST file for each user mailbox within the same machine.
  • Each Zimbra user mailbox item within the extracted .tgz file will get converted and saved one by one into the separate PST file with desirable name and location.

Note: For the 100% accuracy and conversion, it is recommended to perform single mailbox migration to PST at a time.

  • Within Two working days; our clients were able to create the PST file from each user mailboxes and now only needed to migrate PST to Exchange server 2010 platform.

The following video played a major role in heping them convert all their Zimbra mailboxes into PST file.

How Did we Proceed?

To migrate PST to exchange server 2010 SP1 they used an appropriate cmdlet on their exchange management shell. In this way, they have easily exported PST files into the respective Exchange Server mailboxes from the migration machine.

For instance, if you need to migrate any particular user PST file into the respective mailbox on Exchange Server, cmdlet is required and it will be like:

New-MailboxImportRequest –Mailbox Johan –FilePath \ mymachine \ PST-Files \ Johan.pst

Eventually, the organization has successfully migrated its 1000 mailboxes to Exchange Server 2010 without any pain or complications and its employees are now using Outlook in MS exchange environ as their email client to communicate and exchange messages.
